Hey, welcome back. I’m Doctor C.J. from Chagrin River Chiropractic here in Ment-er, Ohio, and today we’re talking about something that I see every single week in my practice. It affects people of all ages — kids, teenagers, working adults, even retirees. We’re talking about tech neck.

Now, you might have heard that term before and kind of laughed it off. But here’s the thing — it’s a real problem, and it’s only getting worse. So let me break this down for you in a way that actually makes sense.

Think about how many times a day you look down at your phone. Or hunch forward at your computer. Or lean into your tablet on the couch. Every time you do that, your head tilts forward, and that changes everything for your spine.

Here’s what’s interesting. Your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds when it’s sitting in a nice, neutral position right on top of your spine. But as soon as you tilt it forward — even just fifteen degrees — the effective stress on your neck muscles and joints can multiply significantly. We’re talking about forces that your body was simply not designed to handle for hours at a time, day after day.

And what happens over time? Your muscles get tight and fatigued. The joints in your cervical spine — that’s your neck — start to experience wear they shouldn’t. You might notice headaches, stiffness when you turn your head, that annoying ache between your shoulder blades, or even tingling down into your arms in more serious cases. Your body is sending you signals. The question is whether you’re listening.

Now, here’s the good news. There are simple things you can start doing right now to take pressure off your neck.

The first one is to raise your screens. Seriously — this one thing makes a huge difference. If you’re on your phone, bring it up to eye level instead of dropping your chin to your chest. If you’re at a desk, your monitor should be positioned so your eyes land roughly in the top third of the screen. You shouldn’t be looking down at a laptop all day. If you are, get a stand and an external keyboard. Your neck will thank you.

Second — take movement breaks. Every thirty minutes or so, get up, move around, and do a few gentle neck retractions. Here’s how that works. Sit up nice and tall, and gently pull your chin straight back — like you’re making a double chin. Hold it for just a couple seconds, then release. It sounds silly, but it helps counteract all that forward head posture you’ve been building up throughout the day.

Third — pay attention to your posture when you’re sitting. Your ears should be over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips. If you’re constantly slouching forward, you’re putting your whole spine in a compromised position, not just your neck.

Now, when should you come in and see someone like me? If you’re already dealing with persistent neck pain, frequent headaches, tightness that doesn’t seem to go away no matter how much you stretch — that’s your sign. Don’t just push through it and hope it gets better on its own. Tech neck that goes unaddressed can lead to real structural changes in the spine over time. The earlier we catch it, the easier it is to correct.

At Chagrin River Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture. We assess your posture, the movement in your spine, and we work with you to come up with a plan that actually fits your life. Whether you need adjustments, soft tissue work, corrective exercises — we’ll figure out what makes sense for you.

You don’t have to live with a stiff, achy neck. And you don’t have to give up your phone or your computer. You just have to be a little more intentional about how you use them.

Thanks so much for tuning in today. If anything resonated with you, or if you’re ready to get your spine checked out, give us a call or stop by. We’re right here in Ment-er, and we’d love to help. I’m Doctor C.J. — take care of yourselves, and we’ll talk soon.
