Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor C. J., and this is the Chagrin River Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Mentor, Ohio. Today we’re talking about something that I think gets misunderstood all the time — and that’s the relationship between flexibility and strength. Now, most people think of these as two separate goals. You stretch, or you lift. You work on one or the other. But here’s the thing — when they’re out of balance, that’s usually when people end up in my office with pain they can’t explain.
So let’s dig into this, because I think it’s going to change the way you think about how your body moves.
Here’s what I hear a lot. Someone comes in and says, “Doctor C. J., I stretch every single day — I don’t understand why my back still hurts.” And on the flip side, I’ll have someone who hits the gym five days a week, lifts heavy, and they’re tight as a board and wondering why their hips ache. Both of those people are missing half the equation.
Let me break this down for you. Flexibility is your body’s ability to move through a full range of motion. Strength is your body’s ability to control that motion. And you need both — working together — to actually protect your joints and move without pain. Flexibility without strength is like having a door with loose hinges. It swings too far, too easily, and eventually something gives. Strength without flexibility is like trying to move in a suit that’s two sizes too small. Your muscles are strong, but they’re pulling on joints that can’t move freely — and that creates stress, tension, and eventually, injury.
Now here’s what’s interesting. Your spine is a perfect example of this. The muscles along your spine need to be strong enough to support your posture and absorb load throughout the day. But if those same muscles are chronically tight — shortened, stiff — they actually pull your vertebrae out of their ideal alignment. That’s when you start to feel that nagging stiffness in the morning, or that ache at the end of a long workday. It’s not just weakness. It’s the combination of tightness and imbalance working against you.
So what can you start doing today? First — if you stretch, don’t just hold a passive stretch and call it done. Try to gently engage the muscle you’re stretching. This is called active stretching, and it trains your nervous system to trust that new range of motion. Second — if you strength train, pay attention to how your body moves, not just how much weight you move. Are your hips hinging evenly? Are your shoulders rounding forward? Poor movement patterns under load are one of the fastest ways to stress your spine and your joints. And third — don’t skip either one. Even ten minutes of gentle mobility work and some basic core stability exercises most days of the week can make a real difference over time.
Now, when should you come see us? If you’ve been dealing with recurring tightness, stiffness that doesn’t go away, or pain that flares up with activity — even low-level activity — that’s a sign something in your movement patterns needs attention. Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is off. And the sooner we look at it, the easier it usually is to address.
At Chagrin River Chiropractic, we don’t just adjust and send you on your way. We look at how you move, where the restrictions are, and what your body actually needs to function well long-term. Whether you’re an athlete, someone who works a desk job, or somewhere in between — this stuff matters for everyone.
So thank you so much for tuning in today. I hope this gave you a new way to think about how flexibility and strength work together — because they really are a team. If you have questions, or you’re ready to come in and get evaluated, we’d love to see you. You can find us right here in Mentor, Ohio at Chagrin River Chiropractic.
