Hey everyone, welcome back! I’m Doctor CJ from Chagrin River Chiropractic here in MEN-TER, Ohio, and today we’re talking about something that affects pretty much every single one of us — ergonomics. Now, I know that word might sound a little technical, but stick with me, because this is genuinely one of the most practical things you can learn to protect your body every single day.

Here’s what I hear all the time in my office. Someone comes in with neck pain or low back pain, and when I ask them about their daily routine, they describe sitting at a desk for eight, nine, ten hours a day. Or maybe they’ve been working from home and they’ve set up at the kitchen table or on the couch. And they just can’t figure out why they hurt. But here’s the thing — it’s not a mystery. The way you position your body throughout the day has an enormous impact on your spine, your muscles, and how you feel.

So let’s break this down and talk about some simple, actionable things you can start doing right now.

First, let’s talk about your chair and your desk setup. If you’re sitting at a computer, your feet should be flat on the floor. Your knees should be roughly at a ninety degree angle. Your hips should be at about the same height as your knees, or just a little higher. And your lower back — this is a big one — your lower back should have some support. A lot of people sit in a slumped, rounded position all day long, and that puts a tremendous amount of stress on the discs in your lumbar spine. If your chair doesn’t have good lumbar support, a rolled up towel or a small pillow placed right at the curve of your lower back can make a real difference.

Now let’s talk about your screen. Your monitor should be at eye level or just slightly below. If you’re constantly looking down at a laptop screen, your head is drifting forward — and for every inch your head moves forward, the effective weight on your neck increases significantly. That’s a lot of extra strain on your cervical spine, day after day after day. If you work on a laptop, consider getting an external keyboard and raising the screen up on a stand. It’s a small investment that can save you a lot of pain.

Here’s another thing people overlook — your elbows and wrists. Your elbows should be close to your body, bent at roughly a ninety degree angle, with your wrists in a neutral position when you type. If you’re reaching forward or your wrists are bent upward, that tension travels right up into your shoulders and neck.

Now, outside of your workstation, let’s talk about home habits. A lot of people come in and tell me they watch TV lying on the couch with their neck propped up at a sharp angle for an hour or two every night. That position is really hard on your neck. Try to sit upright when you can, and if you’re reading on a phone or a tablet, bring the device up toward your face instead of dropping your head down toward the device.

Here’s one of my favorite tips — set a timer. Every thirty minutes, get up and move. Walk around, do a few gentle neck rolls, roll your shoulders back. Your spine loves movement. It’s how the discs stay nourished. Staying in one position for too long, even a perfect position, is still tough on your body.

Now, if you’re already dealing with neck pain, back pain, headaches, or that familiar tension between your shoulder blades — that’s your body telling you something. Don’t just push through it and hope it goes away. These things can become chronic if they’re not addressed, and the good news is that chiropractic care is really effective at helping people recover from posture-related pain and get back to feeling like themselves.

At Chagrin River Chiropractic, we don’t just adjust your spine and send you on your way. We talk with you about your lifestyle, your work setup, and the habits that might be contributing to how you feel. Because long-term relief comes from understanding the whole picture.

So here’s my challenge for you this week. Take a look at your workspace. Check your screen height, your chair height, your foot position. Make one or two small adjustments and see how you feel in a few days. Small changes, done consistently, add up to a big difference over time.

Thank you so much for listening today. If you’re in the MEN-TER area and you’d like to come in and talk about what’s going on with your spine, we would love to see you at Chagrin River Chiropractic. Give us a call, check us out online, or just stop by. We’re here to help. Take care of yourselves, and I’ll talk to you next time.
